Walking through the front doors of the Unbakery and Juicery feels like customers are entering a hidden hipster oasis tucked away on 63rd and Holmes in the East Brookside area. The Unbakery opened in in Feb. and specializes in fresh juices, snacks and healthy spins on favorites like brownies and cookies.

The glass walls and use of rustic looking wood for the tables and counters give off the vibe of a clean and modern hot spot. The open atmosphere and modern decor perfectly matches the hip and healthy vibe they are trying to achieve. Adding to the great atmosphere, the workers were extremely friendly and helpful in explaining the different juices and treats that they offer.

A large glass door fridge stocked with the pre-made in-house juices, health tonics, fruit parfaits and salads greets people as soon as they come in. At the front counter lays an assortment of different treats such as protein balls, cookies, muffins and hemp seed brownies. While the Hemp Seed Brownie didn’t have the texture of a normal brownie, the rich chocolate flavor was there. The hemp seeds were flavorless and little enough that they didn’t interfere with the overall brownie taste.

Unbakery also offers a juice of the day, for example, Watermelon Rose Juice. It turned out to be rather disappointing in flavor and when compared to the watermelon juice from Trader Joe’s, Trader Joe’s wins. Their juice is less expensive and has a much better and more watermelon like flavor.  But Unbakery’s Citrus Juice Three lived up to its expectations with the citrusy flavor that leaves customers feeling healthy and clean.

The only downside of the Unbakery is the unfortunate expensive prices. The juices were $8 a piece while the Hemp Seed Brownie was $4. While it is painful to fork out $12 for a juice and treat, these prices are comparable to other health food restaurants around Kansas City.

It is worth the drive out to the East Brookside area which is adding new hotspots similar to the Unbakery like Heirloom Bakery. If you’re in the mood for a clean treat or juice and are willing to pay a few extra bucks, then the Unbakery is the perfect place to try.
