Rihanna dove into the makeup industry with the release of her makeup brand Fenty Beauty Sept. 7. With the release, fellow celebrity owned makeup company, Kylie Cosmetics by Kylie Jenner and full-range supplier Clinique gained a competitor. With both similarities and differences between these makeup giants, Fenty beauty will have to keep up its quality and style in order to stand out.

Fenty Beauty offers many different types of products from highlighter to primer. It also released makeup tools including a Beauty Blender. The release also dropped a single lip gloss called Gloss Bomb. However, the line does not yet include any eyeshadow, mascara or lipstick.

On the other hand, Kylie Cosmetics focuses more on eyeshadow and lip products with the Candy K lip kit being their best selling product according to kyliecosmetics.com. Clinique offers all different types of products, including both makeup tools and lip stick. In the future, Fenty Beauty may release eyeshadows and lip sticks drawing them into closer competition with both beauty lines.

Fenty Beauty released 40 shades of foundation, aiming to be inclusive of all skin types. Their shades range from very fair to very dark and come in variations for those with warm, cool and neutral undertones. In contrast, Kylie Cosmetics does not offer any foundation options. Clinique offers many different types of foundations with options including powder, cream and liquid. One of their top selling foundations, Even Better Makeup SPF 15, comes in 30 shades according to clinique.com. Clinique’s foundation offers less of a range than Fenty Beauty and less options for those with less common skin tones.

One of Fenty Beauty’s most talked about products on Twitter and YouTube is the Trophy Wife highlighter. The pressed bright gold powder quickly attracted makeup enthusiasts. Kylie Cosmetics also sells multiple highlighters, but none as bold or talked about as Fenty’s. Clinique has a few highlighters but they come in the stick form and are more for the use of contouring rather than giving a bold statement.

Fenty Beauty is a newcomer to the makeup scene and will have to challenge more veteran lines to stay afloat. They are already attracting positive attention for their wide array of foundation shades and bold statement pieces such as the Trophy Wife highlighter. As the line expands to include more products they will have to keep up the high quality and decent prices in order to compete with brands such as Clinique and Kylie Cosmetics.
