With the Jonas Brothers back together, it sure feels like 2009 all over again. The Jonas Brother’s released their first song back together as a band, “Sucker” March 1, six years after they officially broke up in 2013.With the release of “Sucker”,  band members Nick, Kevin, and Joe Jonas demonstrated how much six years can change things, but also how some things will always stay the same.

With the opening lyrics, “We go together/ Like birds of a feather,” Nick’s falsetto is instantly reminiscent of their earlier songs such as “Burnin’ Up.” Their iconic voice continues throughout the whole song, delighting all OG Jonas Brother’s fans. The upbeat rhythem is perfect for either driving down the highway to with some friends or dancing at a party.

However, while the song is certainly catchy, the generic lyrics and unoriginal beat make the song fade into mediocrity. All of the lyrics are certainly overused cliches. There must be thousands of songs that proclaim the singer can’t get the love interest out of their head like a  “tattoo inside my brain.” There is a good beat, but nothing particularly exciting. It would have been nice to see the band come out swinging with a ground-breaking reunion song, but it seems like they just played it safe this time around. Hopefully, their future songs will spice things up a bit.

While the song may lack in originality, the music video, released at the same time as the single, surely is a sweet treat. Set at a lavish mansion with excessive luxury all around, the video gives off strong “Great Gatsby” vibes. Paired with eccentric costumes reminiscent of “Alice and Wonderland,” the video is full of whimsy and fun. While the band has certainly grown up since their “Burnin’ Up” days, the video also showcases what remains of their youthful, playful side.

Instead of having famous actresses play their love interests, the band had their wives and girlfriends star in the video, but as it turns out their significant others just so happen to be actresses as well. Nick’s wife, “Quantico” star Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Kevin’s wife Danielle Jonas and Joe’s fiance actress Sophie Turner are featured heavily in the film, dressed in lavish costumes and doing nonsensical things. At one point in the video, it appears as if Turner is kissing a topiary she had been pruning. Although their actions did not exactly make sense, it was sweet to see the former teen celebrities all grown up with their significant others.

While the video doesn’t really make sense with the song (as most music videos seem to be today), the beautiful cinematography, costumes and set design make it entertaining throughout the complete three minutes.

Rather than the teen heartthrobs they were 10 years ago, the Jonas Brothers have certainly grown up into something more. While “Sucker” pretty much stuck to their classic, award-winning playbook, it will certainly be interesting to see where this trio will go in the future. Who knows? Maybe this reunion will propel the bros back to the top.
