This year’s Her Majesty’s Theater theme was “A Dream Within a Dream” and included works inspired by Edgar Allan Poe. The performances in the gymnasium Oct. 18 featured Petit Chœur de Sion, Grand Chœur de Sion, Symphonie de Sion, and students who read Edgar Allan Poe’s poems.

“I thought of Edgar Allan Poe because we are in late October and it would be a lot of fun for the visual art students,” Music Director Elizabeth Mulkey said.

Every song played or sung in this production was a form of Edgar Allan Poe’s work. For example, the Petit Chœur sang “The Raven Watches Me” by Vicki Tucker Courtney and Symphonie de Sion played for their first song “The Tell-Tale Heart” by Michael Story.

“To get to know our music, we searched and studied the poems to get background,” member of Petit Chœur junior Izzy Winkelmeyer said.

In between performances from the choirs and symphony, there was a shadow puppet show of the poem “Annabel Lee” and a reading of the poem “The Raven,” all by Edgar Allan Poe.

To cap off the night, Grand Chœur and Symphonie de Sion joined together to perform “Superstition” by Stevie Wonder.

“I loved how Edgar Allan Poe’s works were turned into eerie musical pieces,” Symphonie de Sion member junior Sarah White said. “It adds to the feeling of October.”
