Event Master of Ceremonies John Holt leads a panel discussion with two local teachers, two students and a MOCSA preventions specialist about educating students about sexual assault prevention and awareness.

Seniors Ann Huff  and Stella Lilek, Director of High School and Library Media Services Jenny Campbell, Social Studies Curriculum Coordinator Jenny Brown-Howerton, Theology teacher Polly Holmes and counselor Nancy Stevens attended the 14th annual Metropolitan Organization to Counter Sexual Assault Johnson County Fall Forum at the Sheraton Overland Park Oct. 20.  Holmes organized a school table at the event.

“I thought it would be great for [the students] to come and be exposed to what MOCSA does,” Holmes said.

The forum included lunch, a panel discussion by local high school teachers and students about sexual assault community prevention, a presentation about MOCSA’s “The Green Dot” program in schools and a speech by a sexual assault survivor.  All donations given at the event went towards MOCSA’s efforts to assist sexual assault survivors and educate to prevent future assaults.

“Events like this help with understanding and bring awareness to people that need to know that sexual assault is happening,” Huff said.

Although senior theology classes have hosted MOCSA speakers in the past, Lilek hopes to further integrate MOCSA into the school after hearing from the panel.

“I want to try to incorporate MOCSA in any way we can into different clubs at Sion because I think unfortunately we don’t always realize how much [sexual assault] occurs and people just don’t say anything about it,” Lilek said.
