The annual Sock it to Poverty drive held Sept. 10-21 raised 2,451 pairs of socks to benefit Redemptorist Social Services.

“It’s a great cause and I was happy to see that everyone participated, especially in my maison,” senior Emily Koca said. “I brought in over 50 pairs of socks this year so I was thrilled when my maison won.”

Maison Wilcox and Cox led the other maisons with 425 pairs of socks, followed by maison Mulkey with 216 pairs of socks and maison Long with 191 pairs of socks.

“They are so motivated and I think it goes just beyond the competitive aspect that they really want to help those who don’t have the basics like socks,” English teacher Melissa Wilcox said.

The annual Sock it to Poverty drive is a competition between maisons to see which maison can bring in the most socks. The winning maison receives free winter formal tickets, second place get to wear out of uniform sweatshirts for a week and third place gets to wear out of uniform shoes and socks for a week.

“Although we were off to a slow start, we ended up being competitive with years past,” history teacher and Student Council Sponsor Jennifer Brown-Howerton said. “Thanks to all who participated.”
