Seniors Savannah Friedebach and Megan Flanagan raised at least $170 for breast cancer  research and sponsored the annual Dig Pink volleyball game Oct. 1. The team played Bishop Ward High School and emerged with a victory in two sets.

“Breast cancer is something that affects a lot of people, and it is always good to raise money for research,” Flanagan said.

The volleyball program has been celebrating the annual Dig Pink game for at least six years, and Friedebach said she was excited to carry on the tradition of the game.

“If we didn’t do it, no one else would, so we felt like we needed to,” Friedebach said. “I like volleyball and I think it was the best decision for me to put in my senior service project.”

In contrast with the usual white home jerseys, the team utilized the Dig Pink game as an opportunity to wear dark pink jerseys to further raise awareness.

“The best part was that the teams jersey’s were pink,” team manager junior Brie Bowes said. “They use them just for that game and I think that’s very special.”

Friedebach and Flanagan raised money before the game in order to support the foundation. They started in early September by selling t-shirts that could be worn the day of the game. At the game they collected donations at the door. Just from the bake sale and donations, the seniors managed to collect $170, and are still counting T-shirt money. Students who purchased the shirts were able to wear them on Oct. 2 to show their support.

“I always like to see the players get involved with trying to make a difference in the world,” Varsity Coach Bob Lampen said, “especially in the fight to end cancer, which affects all of us in one way or another.”
