The soccer team played the Belton Pirates April 23 at home in a  game that went into overtime with the team winning 4-2 in penalty kicks.

“We played very well. We possessed the ball, and had more shots than Belton,” junior Rose Orrick said. “So, we just needed to finish and I’m just glad we did even though it went into two overtimes and PKs.”

The Storm had possession most of the game and had 35 shots on goal compared to Belton’s two. In the first half, sophomore Haley Langle ran the ball down the field make a goal to make a goal but was stopped quickly by Belton’s goalie, Abbie Aguirre, and Langle somersaulted over her. Later, senior Gabby Grimaldi passed the ball to freshman Grace Townsend who had a breakaway but was cut short when the refs noticed Storm was offsides. At eight minutes left in the first half, the score was 0-0. Belton scored the first goal in the last 28 seconds of the half.

In the second half, Storm sophomore Clara Banes headed the ball with a group of girls around her and fell to the ground with a leg injury. She was helped off the field. Three yellow cards were given out during the game. Two of them were to Belton and one was to sophomore Kiely Schieffer. Junior Logan Dixon scored with 14 minutes left in the second half putting the score at 1-1.

“I think we played well but while during the game didn’t go as planned, we went into both overtimes and penalties so I’m really happy we won,” sophomore Megan Aldaco said.

With the game ending in a tie, the teams went into overtime. After two 10 minutes halves where no one scored, the game went to penalty kicks. Belton shot four times, making one goal, missing two, and senior Molly Wagner saving one. Storm shot three times, making all three goals with sophomore Grace Riley, Grimaldi, and Dixon scoring their attempts.

“I’m happy with the result in today’s game. I think our final tally was 35 shots to 2 so we probably should put more goals in but we got to play overtime and got to practice PKs,” head soccer coach Matt Darby said. “Everybody makes the playoffs so losing in PKs isn’t a big deal, but actually experiencing something that could happen in the playoffs is a good thing for the kids to go through the PKs situation.”
