Winning the Battle
The basketball team defeats Lincoln Prep High School in a physical game.

The basketball team won 49-40 against Lincoln Prep High School in a free throw heavy game Feb. 18.
“I think the game went really well,” Head Coach Chad Lynn said. “The most important thing for us was that we stayed strong, and we got the W so that’s good.”
The team had played Lincoln Prep High School before in previous seasons and knew they would be a tough and physical team, according to junior Olivia Shively. In order to prepare for this, the team focused on staying strong and setting good blocks.
“From the past times we’ve played them, they’ve always been very physical,” Shively said. “We didn’t really know how to judge it and what type of physical they were going to be, but it was like our previous game, only a bit more physical.”
Due to the physicality, there were many fouls in the game, and both teams hit the double bonus in the fourth quarter. The Storm scored 15 points off of free throws with 14 of those coming in the fourth quarter. Junior and captain Shannon Karlin made nine of the 15 free throws and shot 100 percent of the free throws she took.
“I normally don’t notice my shooting percentage, but I was really happy this game that I made all my free throws because in other close games I missed free throws that hurt our team,” Karlin said. “In close games, those free throws are important to get your team a more comfortable lead and keep the momentum on your side.”
After the first half, the Storm was winning 21-13 with a late three-pointer by freshman Makayla Hebert. The third quarter started with seniors Rose Orrick and Lily Henkle in foul trouble, leading to them not playing that quarter and a change in the formation.
“We went to a triangle and two zone to try to cover up their two shooters, but they started getting rebounds and getting back in,” Lynn said. “So in the fourth quarter we got Lily and Rose back in, and we got back to our regular defense.
In the fourth quarter with the original formation, the Storm was able to stretch their lead after a close third quarter. The Storm scored 22 points in the fourth quarter, with 14 of their points coming from free throws.
“I think the biggest thing that helped us pull ahead in the fourth quarter was focusing on our game, what we are good at and playing as a team instead of worrying about the pressure Lincoln Prep was putting on us,” Karlin said.
This game helped improve their record to 10-11 and helped the team get more experience in before their big rivalry game coming up against St. Teresa’s Academy Feb. 27 at 6 p.m. at Sion.
