Breakfast. It’s one of the most important meals of the day, but for some reason, I find myself spending too much money on it. Ginger Sue’s located in Olathe, Kansas; Lee’s Summit and Liberty Missouri, offers quality breakfast food at affordable prices.

It’s a beautiful spring morning and after a nice spa day with my sister and friend, we decide to get brunch at the Olathe Ginger Sue’s located on 14178 W 119th St. The restaurant is very clean and put together and even though There are not a lot of decorations the light colored walls and giant windows really bring in light, making the space open and airy. This is a great feature because on a crowded weekend morning, I didn’t feel cramped when waiting for a table or eating.

Three slices of french toast with powdered sugar on top, served with seasoned potatoes, syrup and a berry compote.

After being seated at a wooden table high top, we were given a very simple menu. There isn’t a huge amount of choices like some other local restaurants which is both good and bad. Good because it makes it easier to decide but bad because I didn’t feel like they had a giant variety compared to at First Watch. Nevertheless, Ginger Sue’s sticks with all the breakfast classics with some twists, such as the French Toast. Forget your normal square pieces of bread, this french toast is served on three fat slices of french bread. I felt like this gave the dish a new consistency that heightened the flavor, especially the cinnamon. On top of that, the french toast was served with warm maple syrup and a berry compote.

The West Coast Omlette, served with extra avacado instead of bacon, a biscuit and seasoned potatoes.

My sister ordered the Belgian Waffles, which didn’t disappoint. There’s nothing insanely different with these waffles but they’re just overall good. But what my sister and I love about them is the berry compote that comes with it. This thick jam-like topping tastes like a field of berries with every bite. I ordered the West Coast Omelette which normally comes with bacon, sliced avocado, shredded cheddar jack cheese and is topped with salsa and sour cream. But as a new found vegetarian for lent, I skipped the bacon and got extra avocado instead. I absolutely adore avocados, so when my food came out with them perfectly ripened I was over the moon. I also want to give Ginger Sue’s a round of applause for not being super stingy and for not charging me extra with the avocado like most restaurants do. The fresh, homemade salsa countered the eggs nicely and kept the omelette from being dry. All omelets are served with perfectly roasted and flavored potatoes and a homemade biscuit. The biscuit was as fluffy as a cloud and the whipped butter it’s served with makes it melt in your mouth. This very filling meal was only $9 and the waffles were $5.50, very reasonable prices for the quality and quantity of food we received.

Other items on the menu consist of face size inch thick pancakes, eggs benedict and biscuits and gravy. Ginger Sue’s is the perfect place to have a casual breakfast with family or friends. The only bad things about this restaurant is that I found it hard to get a refill on my water and I noticed there were no sides listed on the menu so if you wanted a side of fruit or potatoes it was a mystery how much it would cost. Other than that, I give Ginger Sue’s 4 stars because of the reasonable prices, quality of food and friendly waitstaff.
