Warm Bodies: February 1, PG-13
In this romantic comedy, the vast majority of planet earth has been turned into a zombie population who scour what remains of civilization, searching for any humans that still remain. The scene zeros in on a zombie called R, played by Nicholas Hoult, who has slowly begun to realize he doesn’t fit in with the zombie way of life–he’s lonely. Until he sees one of the few remaining humans, a girl named Julie, played by Teresa Palmer, fending off a pack of zombies. So, he saves her life. As the movie progresses, R slowly becomes more human as he spends more time with Julie and causes the start of a transformation for a dead world.
“I want to see it,” junior Hanna Meek said. “I think it looks funny and oddly cute.”
This movie promises to be a modern take on a classic love story.
Identity Thief: February 8, R
When an innocent, do-no-wrong businessman named Sandy Patterson has his identity stolen by a woman in Florida, he leaves his Colorado home intent on finding her and bringing her back to face charges. Once he finds her, however, things quickly escalate out of control. He comes to discover she has borrowed money from some shady people who now want her dead. Sandy impulsively decides to promise his impersonator, whose real name is Diana, that he will not press charges if she agrees to go to Colorado with him.
“I think it will be really funny,” senior Michaela Bukaty. “If Melissa McCarthy is in it, it will be a good movie.”
Starring the hilarious team of Jason Bateman and Melissa McCarthy, this movie will have you laughing from beginning to end.
Side Effects: February 8, R
In this dramatic thriller, Emily (Rooney Mara) and Martin (Channing Tatum) Taylor, a successful, attractive New York couple have their world swept out from under them. On the outside, they appear to have it all: the job, the money, the looks, and to top it all, they are clearly in love and happy. Until Emily is prescribed a drug called Ablixa by her psychiatrist (Jude Law) to treat her anxiety. The drug has unexpected side effects that no one can predict and cause Emily to be charged with a murder she doesn’t remember committing.
“It seems like an interesting and creative story, but it might be a little too action packed for my taste,” junior Emily Schnitker said. “I’m not sure if I will see it, but it looks really good.”
This film will have you on the edge of your seat as the truth is revealed.
Safe Haven: February 14, PG-13
When a young, frightened woman called Katie starts running from her past, she finds herself in a small town called Southport, North Carolina. Katie thinks she will be safe from those who chase her and remain unnoticed until she meets a widower who believes he can keep her safe from her past. They connect more than Katie ever expected and when it is time to move on and keep running, she finds herself unable to just walk away and must decide if what they have is worth sharing and facing her fears.
“I think it’s one of those movies that could either be really good or just completely fail,” sophomore Lauren Redmond said.
Starring Julianne Hough and Josh Duhamel, this movie promises to send you through an entire spectrum of emotions before you discover the whole truth of her story.
Beautiful Creatures: February 14, PG-13
Based on the book by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl, this movie begins by following a high school boy named Ethan who is unhappy with his place in the small southern town he grew up in. Until he meets the new girl, Lena. Together they discover the mysterious pasts of their families and learn that they must be strong enough to choose their own destinies, not allowing others to choose for them.
“I thought it was weird that it was based off a book because it looked so strange,” senior Jane Crook said. “It has potential, but the actors seem childish.”
In this fantasy thriller, starring newcomers Alden Ehrenreich and Alice Englert, there is potential. It will have you holding on to the edge of your seat as you wait to see what path Lena chooses and if they can be stronger together.
Hansel and Gretel-Witch Hunters: January 25, R
In this modern fairy tale featuring Hansel and Gretel, the world is far from a path with bread crumbs and a house made of sweet treats. Hansel and Gretel are now witch hunters in a quest for vengeance for a witch who kidnapped them when they were young and very nearly killed them. As the plot unfolds, they soon realize they are fighting a world full of so much more than simply witches and must up their game to stay alive.
“I’m kind of excited for Hansel and Gretel,” senior Elizabeth Prusa said. “It looks really thrilling. Definitely not your typical fairy tale.”
Starring Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton as the brother/sister pair, this film will will have you fearing for your own life as the director brings witches to life and takes it as far from a happy ending as possible.
