Westport Flea Market Pleases

Opening the doors of a plain-looking storefront, eyes immediately notice the dark, all-wood interior of the memorabilia-covered restaurant known as Westport Flea Market, found at 817 Westport Rd in Kansas City. One might also notice that there’s no hostess waiting to seat customers; at “The Flea” you seat yourself.

But first you have to order. On the corner of the bar a sign says “Order Here.” They ask for your name, then you have your pick of classic bar and grill-type foods such as burgers, salads and sandwiches. All but the Super Flea, a five layer bacon cheeseburger served with 2 pounds of fries, are under $10. Cash is the only accepted payment, but there’s an ATM in the restaurant.

After ordering and paying, you’ll find a seat, where a waiter will then take your drink order. The drinks are served in cups with little red straws.

The wait for the food was 5-10 minutes with 80s music playing in the background. A man’s voice yells a name along with “Your order’s ready!” through a microphone. A “Pick-Up Here” window opening to the kitchen serves you your food, and a cold condiments bar is to the right, providing mayo, lettuce, tomatoes and other toppings.

The Mini Market Burger, $7.99, is served with curly fries, and, like all the beef in the restaurant, comes from McGonigle’s Market. It is fresh, and a great size at 5.5 oz. It isn’t hard to believe what “The Flea” says about being the best burger in KC.

Westport Flea Market has great entertainment with several pool tables as well as arcade games. And, true to its name, set off in a corner is an actual flea market, open Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
