Out from Behind the Screen
During this quarantine filled with endless boredom and hours upon hours of switching between Netflix, Hulu, Snapchat and Instagram, here are some easy at-home workouts that will get you out of bed and outside.
1. Walks
This one, in particular, is my favorite. If you hate running as I do, then this is an obvious and easy alternative. Pop in your headphones and listen to your favorite music as you walk around the neighborhood or get your dogs and family members to join you. While walking, aim for less busy times as well as areas that aren’t crowded. Avoid going to overcrowded parks and trails, especially during the weekend. The easiest and safest locations for walking are the streets within your neighborhood. If you pass someone while walking, cross the street to ensure you maintain the recommended six feet apart distance.
2. Yoga
Yoga is a great way to start your morning and get you in the right mindset to tackle a day of Zooms and homework. There are simple, beginner yoga tutorials available on Youtube if you’re not a pro (like me) that will have you feeling refreshed and accomplished after just 10 minutes. The app Yoga for Beginners: Mind+Body, available in the app store, is a great free resource to get anyone started on implementing yoga into their daily routine.
3. Running
Personally, I would pass out after running for a mile, which is why I opt for walks, but for all the track stars out there, this is an easy way to get those steps in and raise your endorphins. To track your steps, you can use to default downloaded health app on iPhones or try out an Apple Watch. As with walking, avoid running in highly crowded parks or trails, especially during hours of increased crowds. As the weather continues to warm, more are likely to search for new ways to get outdoors. When running, stay as far away from others as you can. The six feet apart recommendation still applies.
4. Workout circuit
This can be abs, legs, arms, whatever you want, really. You can find these workouts easily on Pinterest or Youtube, and there are a lot that don’t call for fancy machinery or equipment. With gyms closed due to COVID-19, at-home workouts have proven to be a great alternative. Many fitness leaders are offering live virtual classes. Producer, dancer and actress Debbie Allen hosts weekly dance classes via Instagram Live. Many others are doing the same. If you’d like more concentrated guidelines to workouts, download the free app store app FitOn. The app features exercises ranging in intensity as well as time. Featured celebrity trainers include actress Gabrielle Union and Queer Eye’s Johnathan Van Ness.
5. Playing basketball or other sports
This is a fun and easy way to get out of the house. Grab your siblings and start a game of basketball or soccer. You can even make it more exciting and make up a new game or play classics like HORSE. Making up a sports game isn’t as hard as it seems. A trick I recommend is to try to combine two different games into one. For example, you can play a four corners game of soccer, or you can play hula hoop frisbee—a game where each player throws a frisbee to each other while simultaneously trying to hula hoop.

I love this. What a cute and wholesome story. Love seeing Paula shoot hoops. What a baller.
