We’re just a week away from the biggest night in fashion: the Met Gala. Each year, on the first Monday of May, some of the world’s biggest stars and fashion icons gather together in New York City for the grand event. So as the most infamous day in May approaches, here’s everything you need to know about the 2023 Met Gala.
What Exactly Is The Met Gala?
The Met Gala may only seem like an opportunity for a bunch of rich people to attend a lavish party (not before walking up the 13-½ foot high staircase) but it actually serves as a fundraising event for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. The money raised at the Met Gala is the main source of annual funding for the Costume Institute’s exhibitions, acquisitions, and capital improvements. The fundraised money comes from the sale of tickets which are bought by designers and brands. According to Harper’s Bazaar tickets cost $35,000 a piece with tables costing anywhere between $200,000 to $300,000.

To be one of the lucky 600 guests that gets to attend the Met Gala, you must be selected by Vogue Editor-In-Chief Anna Wintour herself. Yes, the woman who Meryl Streep’s character in “The Devil Wears Prada” is based on. Typically the guests who Wintour selects have donated tons of money to the museum or are some of the most talked about people in Hollywood.

This year’s Met Gala theme is ‘Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty’ coinciding with the Costume Institute’s spring 2023 exhibition focusing on the work of Karl Lagerfeld. Lagerfeld, best known for the modern revival of Chanel during his time as creative director, was a frequent visitor of the Met Museum and has served as an inspiration for many designers. In addition to being the center of this year’s Met Gala theme, the May 2023 cover of Vogue was dedicated to Lagerfeld and featured many of his muses as well as other designers who have been inspired by his work.

All of the outfits worn by the rich and the famous on the Met Gala red carpet must follow or fit in with the gala’s theme. Since this year’s theme is “In Honor of Karl”, I personally think many of the attendees will wear vintage Chanel ensembles or outfits by other designers that pull inspiration from Lagerfeld’s designs. Attendees could also wear pieces from Lagerfeld’s time designing at other brands such as Fendi, Balmain, Jean Patou, and Chloé.
Who Should I Look Out For?
Considering that the entire guest list pretty much remains unknown, there are few people to watch prior to the beginning of the Met Gala carpet. However, of the confirmed attendees Depp and Delevingne will be the ones to pay attention to. Delevingne was one of Lagerfeld’s favorite models and she starred in many of the Chanel runway shows. Delevingne is also a brand partner of the French fashion house and has been since 2015. Depp is currently in a partnership with Chanel and is the brand’s newest star. Considering Depp’s current relationship with Chanel, there’s a high chance she will be dressed by the brand in possibly one of Lagerfeld’s most iconic looks.
So in short, clear your calendar for May 1st because the 2023 Met Gala is sure to be one of the most talked about nights in fashion for years to come.
