Father-Daughter Chili Contest Brings Friendly Competition

Chili may be associated with cold winter nights but yesterday it came served with a side of competition at the first annual father/daughter chili cook off.

In years before, the father/daughter event was a barbeque, but the idea of a chili contest was presented. The father/daughter event planning committee liked the idea and decided to run with it according to event coordinator Sarah Johnson.

“This one[chili cook off] creates more competition and interactiveness between families,” senior Anna Sell said.

Instead of going to a barbeque just to eat, students and their dads prepared either chili or wings, set-up their table and named their dish. Some names were “All We do is Win[g],” “Doug and Anna’s excellent chili” and “It’s porky and we know it.”

“Our table was fiesta themed,” sophomore Anneliese Glickley said.

Winners in many different categories were chosen by judges Co-Athletic Director Kate Pilgreen, parent Bud Ostrander and Associate Head of School for Curriculum and Instruction Steven Turner. Johnson picked the judges.

First place in the chili category went to Brian Walz and his daughters junior Elsa Walz and freshman Kiera Walz.  While first place for wings went to Ty Ritter and sophomore Paige Ritter.

There were also awards chosen by people’s choice. John Huff and sophomore Ann Huff won for chili and Errick Arroyo, senior Elizabeth Arroyo and junior Maria Arroyo won for wings. The event was a success according to Johnson.
“It’s my cup of tea or should I say, bowl of chili,” Turner said.
