Powerball Provides Promise
Three winners won the Powerball jackpot, resulting a three way division of the 1.6 billion dollar prize. Smaller prizes were also given to many across the United States.
After over eight weeks with no Powerball jackpot winner, the drawing on Jan. 13 resulted in three winners. With $1.6 billion prize money, one could buy the Kansas City Chiefs, the Kansas City Royals and have $100 million left in their pocket. The unsurmountable amount of money was won after beating the 1 to 292.2 million odds, according to Powerball.com.
Winners had to have the numbers 4-8-19-27-34 in any order and the Powerball number 10. Residents in Munford, Tennessee, Chino Hills, California and Melbourne Beach, Florida won. All three winners chose to remain anonymous.
In addition to those winners, 73 $1 million prizes were awarded to individuals that matched only the five numbers without the Powerball.
The winners have two options: they can collect the jackpot in 30 annual payments resulting in about $533 million, or they can split the sum three ways resulting in a lump sum of $327.3 million per individual.
Eight hundred and twenty seven people won $50,000 after matching just four of the initial numbers and the Powerball. Smaller prizes were also awarded.
“I think my family won $20,” senior Stephanie Ostrander said.
As the prize money grew larger, more and more individuals started purchasing their tickets. Director of Facilities and Operations Andy Sheer even created a pool composed of the Sion faculty. He purchased over 200 tickets from all different locations in the Kansas City area.
“We have done this for a long time, whenever the jackpot gets big. It’s a fun way to build community within the faculty,” Sheer said. “Math teachers Reynold Middleton and Robert Lampen even created a spreadsheet showing the possibilities of winning.”
