After a genuine love for Sion filled the gym during Student Council Executive Officer speeches, students elected junior Elsa Brundige as President, sophomore Melissa Hamilton as Vice President and freshman Ava Rawson as Secretary for the 2016-2017 school year. Other candidates in the running were juniors Elizabeth Jackoboice, Claire Raulston and Zoe Trouve for President and Mariah Lynn for Vice President.

During their speeches, each student stressed their strong connection to Sion, explaining how the school has helped them discover their interests and grow into confident women. In particular, Brundige, who has attended Sion since first grade, described it as a “second home.”

“In some ways, I am kind of more Sionian than I am American,” Brundige said. “As much as I love that red white and blue, there’s just something about that purple and white.”

She then went on to explain that, thanks to Madame Bono’s posters, she can recite the school song word-for-word; whereas, as she nears the middle of the National Anthem, she finds herself beginning to mumble.

Hamilton also shares a very strong love for Sion – so strong that whenever she gets lost, she automatically drives to Sion. Her experience in STUCCO, because she does not participate in sports, has allowed her to become more involved in the school in a different way. She looks forward to helping other students partake in this involvement.

“If there’s one thing that I could change, I would like more people to get involved,” Hamilton said. “I hope to get the whole school participating.”

Rawson also shares this fondness of the school community, as she quickly took a liking to the embracing atmosphere of Sion.

“What made me interested in STUCCO was how nice everyone was at the Freshmen mixer,” Rawson said. “I want to be able to help welcome the new incoming freshmen in the same fashion.”

Looking ahead, the next school year should be one of uniting students.

“My focus is going to be on bringing each member of the Sion community closer and emphasizing school spirit in all areas of Sion,” Brundige said.
