Girls prepare to get their haircut to donate to Pantene’s Beautiful Lengths.

A group of over 20 women including students and faculty relinquished their long hair for a good cause on April 21 in the gym. The “Pony Up” event, organized by seniors Emmie Gragg and Nathalie Barbeau for their senior service project, is sponsored by Pantene who uses the hair to create wigs for cancer patients undergoing radiation and chemotherapy. The event began with a presentation about senior Katarina Qamar who is a cancer survivor, presented by senior Maggie Keller.

Gragg and Barbeau wanted to bring “Pony Up” back to Sion because of women like Qamar all over the country who are battling cancer and just need to feel like themselves again. Qamar also donated her hair, because she knows what it is like to lose your hair while going through cancer treatment.

“We wanted to try to rally all the girls at Sion to donate their beautiful hair to make some woman out there battling cancer feel beautiful,” Gragg said

Gragg and Barbeau said that girls helping other girls is very important. They said that cutting off at least 8 inches of hair is a small act that can have a big affect on someone’s life.
“The thought of a woman looking in the mirror and not being able to do a thing about how she looks when is already going through so much is heartbreaking,” Gragg said.
