Seniors Alexis Cucchiara, Anna Sell and Madison Masillionis throw old college brochures in a bonfire.

Seniors are rounding the last corner of their high school experience with college decision day, Friday April 29. Seniors met on the track during lunch/study hall to take pictures, had a bonfire to burn any old college papers and ate shaved ice in celebration.

“This is a great way for the whole school to celebrate where the seniors will be going next year,” College Counselor Erin Stein said.

College decision day is traditionally celebrated on May 1 but since that was a Sunday, they moved it, according to Stein. This is the day when high school seniors are required to communicate with the college of their choice telling them they will be attending in the fall. This is also a day when seniors sport their school letters and show classmates and teachers the school they will be attending.

“It will be exciting to see where all my Sion sisters will be going next year,” senior Anna Sell said.

The purpose of the celebration is for seniors to take the next step to graduating and moving on according to Stein. Sion is one of the only schools in the Kansas City area to have a celebration for high school seniors.

“College decision day is when the seniors see the fruits of their labor and hard work,” Stein said.

The next event for seniors, after college decision day, is the senior mother daughter luncheon, where the school will commend the accomplishments of the senior class.
