Seeing and Supporting (RED)
New iPhone model will donate proceeds from its sale to help make an AIDS-free generation.
Apple’s special edition iPhone 7 (PRODUCT)RED will donate proceeds with every purchase contributing to the Global Fund research of HIV/AIDS.
The (RED) iPhone 7 costs $749, and iPhone 7+ costs $869, Apple promises to improve the camera, battery life, sound, water resistance and the brightness in screen display all while donating to HIV/AID research with every purchase of the (RED) model, according to Apple.
“People are going to buy iPhones no matter what,” Spanish teacher and Social Awareness Club sponsor Leah LaFaver said. “But it helps [customers] think about the issue in purchasing.”
According to (RED) CEO Deborah Dugan, the new (RED) phone isn’t the only Apple product available that donates its proceeds to the HIV/AIDS cause. Apple is also selling other special edition devices like iPods costing $49 – $149, Beats headphones and speakers costing $295.95, power stations costing $49.95 – $79.95, sport bands costing $49 and iPhone cases and iPad cases costing $39 – $79.
“When I did some research on this, it looked like Apple has been partnering with (RED) for 10 years,” librarian and Social Awareness Club sponsor Jennifer Campbell said. “So maybe now that Apple is so popular and a front runner in the technology market, they feel that they can affect more change for the cause.”
According to the Gates Foundation, more than 70 percent of the world’s HIV-positive individuals live in sub-Saharan Africa, which is why the Global Fund is working there specifically.
The Gates Foundation has a special focus on ceasing the transmission of HIV from mothers to their unborn babies. The organization also administers testing, treatment and counseling.
“I think that new medications have done an excellent job of preventing HIV from becoming AIDS and or prolonging the lives of those with the disease,” Campbell said. “I also know people who get tested regularly, so I think there is a good awareness of taking charge of your health in that manner.”
