In honor of the tenth anniversary of the iPhone, Apple launched the iPhone X, along with the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus on Sept.12 at the Steve Jobs Theatre, in Cupertino, Calif. Substantial changes, such as a complete redesign, a new ‘super retina’ resolution, and wireless charging were made in the development of the iPhone X device. will be sold in stores Nov. 3.

The new design of the iPhone X consists of an edge-to-edge glass screen and glass back with rounded corners. Unlike previous devices, the iPhone X doesn’t have a physical home button. Instead, the devices utilizes intuitive gestures for functionality. The iPhone X also comes with an organic light emitting diodes display, rather than the previous liquid crystal display. Because of this, the new device displays more true-to-life colors with a 1,000,000 to 1 contrast ratio. The iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus still use the original LCD display. Apple also introduced a new IOS software for both the iPhone 8 and iPhone X.

“The IOS software on the iPhone X is superb. It moves faster. The safari is more up to date and they’ve improved on all the apps on it. It’s a great phone,” Apple advisor Dontrelle said.

Rumors predicted facial recognition would be an included feature in regards to the iPhone X, and Apple confirmed the new technology is in fact real. Facial recognition is used with a TrueDepth camera which analyzes more than 30,000 invisible dots on the user’s face, creating a map for the phone to recognize. Apple designed this feature for the purpose of a more secure passcode lock, where the user’s face is now the way to access the device. The iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus don’t have this feature.

“I think that I would buy the iPhone X because I have an upgrade available soon, but if I didn’t then I don’t think I would,” junior Hope Locke said. “I don’t like the facial recognition idea because I feel like it would be a hassle and won’t work very well.”

Both the iPhone 8 and iPhone X come with wireless charging. In the past, Apple always used a cord, which required an outlet or some additional power source to charge their devices. Now, the new iPhones charge off an AirPower mat, which doesn’t require a cord plugged into the device. The devices sit screen up anywhere on the mat and are charged.

“I am excited for the new iPhone because the entire front is the screen and it has wireless charging,” senior Gabby Lord said. “I would say no to buying the iPhone 8 because there aren’t any significant changes between the iPhone 8 and the iPhone 7 I have now.”

When it comes to the iPhone X and the iPhone 8, substantial changes were made in comparison to previous Apple devices. Confirmed details regarding Apple’s tenth Anniversary iPhones give us an idea to what we will be seeing in the near future.
