Prom Night ‘Blooms’ to Success
Prom was held April 7 at the Sheraton Overland Park hotel with a theme of “In Bloom.”
Floral decorations were spread all throughout the Sheraton Overland Park hotel ballroom for Prom April 7th. As students arrived, they were handed a mocktail beverage ticket, which included sparkling lemonade with a decorative edible flower to coordinate with the theme “In Bloom.”
“Juniors are supposed to put the prom on for the seniors, so it’s supposed to be throwing it in honor of the seniors” Royalty Chair Chandler Rawson said.
The doors opened at 6:30 p.m. and introductions started at 7 p.m. followed by dinner and the dance. Everything, including the music, seating, food, decorations, prom queen and the attendee announcements were planned by juniors on Prom committee.
“I thought that the prom committee did an amazing job with every detail and making sure the seniors felt like it was their dance from the speeches to prom queen to introductions,” senior Catherine Dehaemers said.
Multiple photo backgrounds and booths were available for students to take pictures as well as a mocktail bar. This year’s theme was inspired by the Gucci Bloom campaign according to junior Head of Prom Committee Kendall Rogers.
“I know we tried to put a lot of emphasis on decorations and just making sure everybody has a good time,” Rogers said.
Prom queen was announced as senior Gabby Lord. Her attendants were seniors Afton Fennewald and Ellie Magsamen and the princess was senior Joileeah Worley. Rawson sent out a google document for seniors to vote for the queen and the attendees.
The prom committee focused on making every detail special and worked closely with the hotel in picking the menu and tasting the food in advance. The senior’s opinion on the theme and decorations was very important in making the final decisions and assuring that their last senior prom was one to remember, according to Sponsor of Prom Committee and volleyball coach Sarah Johnson.
“In 20 years you guys will not be saying, ‘Do you remember that fabulous chicken that we had at prom’ or ‘Oh my gosh, do you remember your centerpiece at prom? You just remember the fun night spent with friends,” Johnson said.
