The basketball team will take on St. Teresa’s Academy at 7 p.m. Feb. 21 in the gym to fight for the Irish cup. A tailgate will be held before the game for students and prospective 5th through 6th graders starting at 5 p.m. 

Students are invited to participate in face painting, purchase a hot dog dinner, and enjoy a performance from Drum Line. Prospective students can take part in headband making and other games put on by the Scream Team leaders.

“When we show our school spirit, kids from middle schools see that and it helps them feel welcomed,” senior Scream Team leader Savannah Friedebach said. “They want to be a part of Sion too.”

The theme for the game is traditional purple and white, and everyone is invited to attend and support the basketball team as they fight for the Irish Cup. The cup is important because it is a long living tradition and the team really wants to bring it home, according to junior Lily Henkle.

“It’s also senior night, so I’m looking forward to having a special night for the seniors,” Henkle said. “I just really want to play against STA again since we lost to them earlier in the season.”

This Thursday is a spirit day and a no-homework night. Students may wear purple or white shirts with their skirts during the school day. The staff and administration are highly encouraging student participation at the game, and it’s important to show everyone how much spirit the school has, according to Friedebach.

“We are really known for our supportive environment and one way we can show how supportive we are is to show up for each other at games,” Friedebach said. “It’s what Sion is all about.”

The Irish Cup is kept for the year by the winning team of the big game. Last year, the team beat STA and won the cup. The basketball team has been working hard and is looking forward to beating STA in front of a huge crowd for the seniors, according to sophomore Shannon Karlin.

“It’s important to try to get the cup for bragging rights,” Karlin said. “It shows your pride for your team and your school.”
