The Father Daughter Barbecue took place on Friday August 20 in the Sion parking lot as father daughter duos competed for various prizes. The event was located in the south-side parking lot with tents set up to display the barbecue for the competition as well as tables full of meals catered by Jack Stack. Seating under the tent provided a break from the sun and a place to watch the Chiefs game.

Those in attendance included a significant amount of the incoming freshmen with students from the remaining grades sprinkled throughout the event as well This provided a great opportunity for the freshmen to get to know their fellow classmates and experience the closeness of the Sion community.

“The barbecue helped me because I met a few more people,” freshman Annie Johnson said. “I kind of got a friend group that I really like, and I got to know more people from my field hockey team.”

The barbecue featured twelve father-daughter duo’s cooking to compete for prizes. The contest was judged by former Chiefs player Dustin Colquitt, Soren Petro, Frank Boal, and Alicia Kotarba. The contest was judged based on the different varieties of meats that were offered. One of the winners of the cook-off was father-daughter duo Addi Bowes and Bob Bowes.

The experience competing in the cook-off was really fun,” freshman Bowes said. “I feel like everyone felt that they got to bond with their dads which is always good. It was just a positive experience.”

Though not everyone got a prize from the competition, those who signed up by the set deadline got father-daughter shirts for free to match with their fathers. The barbecue provided a fun event to kick-off the school year with the Sion community.

“Yes it was an overall good experience,” senior Anna Baklanov said. I thought it was very fun to see people I hadn’t seen in so long, be with my friends, and have some barbecue. It was so nice.”
