Sion celebrated the 110th annual founders day in Kansas City Jan 18. Students learned about the school’s history and the administration announced the new mission and vision statements.
Students started the celebration in their maisons where they played a trivia game and watched a video about the school’s founders. While watching, the students filled out sticky notes with ‘I wonder’ and ‘I liked statements. Students later compiled the notes onto poster boards for reflection.
“I think it was awesome that we got to learn about how the school was founded, where it came from and what the morals are,” freshman Maggie Grilliot said. “I thought it was really fun that we got to do a hands-on activity that included everyone.”
Afterwards, the school gathered in the gym for a presentation by mission director Annie Riggs, where they school’s new mission and vision statements were revealed.
“Over the past two years, we’ve been working to update our mission and vision statements,” Riggs said. “If you’ve seen our old mission statements in our classrooms, you’ve probably noticed that they’re each a paragraph long. It is our hope that with the new mission statements anyone can understand, remember and share our statements wether they’re really familiar with sion or not.”
The new mission statement reads: “Inspired by our Catholic faith, our mission is to cultivate a welcoming community that empowers students for success in a religiously and culturally diverse world.” And the new vision statement is: “Reflecting God’s Divine love, our vision is to prepare graduates who will contribute justice, peace, and love to the world.”
“As members on the sion community, we are called to continue the legacy of our founders, Father Theadore and Father Alfonse, and the sisters of sion to reflect on the light of God’s divine love for one another,” Riggs said. “And by our daily actions contribute to a world of peace, justice, and love.”
The school also released a video to launch the new statements.
Students and faculty finished the celebration by singing the school song and enjoying Sion cookies.
