On Feb 13, Sion hosted its annual Sion Olympics. The competition between grades is a mixture of dances prepared by each grade’s Student Council and games, ending in a grade crowned the winner. This year, the seniors took the crown, followed up by the juniors, sophomores, and freshmen.
“We put in a lot of work this year,” sophomore Claire Henke said. “We wanted the dance to look great.”
Student Council members have to put in a lot of effort outside of school to get the dances presentable. In the days leading up to the Sion Olympics, students could see members from various grades practicing in the Grande Salle. Henke and the sophomore Student Council members practiced for weeks leading up to the Olympics.
“We practiced in the morning pretty much every day for two weeks,” Henke said.
The other major part of the Sion Olympics is the games. This year, there were two, a game where contestants fished out gummy worms from whipped cream, and a guessing game featuring drinks from the Vive Cafe.
“It was a lot of fun, sophomore Maggie Grilliot said. “Even though I was out there for not the longest time, I had a great time and would do it again”
It was also the freshmen’s first time seeing the Olympics, making it an even more exciting experience. However, some thought it was a bit of a let down.
“I thought it was overhyped,” freshman Aynslee Douglas said. “There wasn’t much participation, especially from the freshmen.”
Overall, the Sion Olympics was an exciting way to end the day, a unique way to create class and school pride and a confidence booster for the Student Council members.
“I was very nervous dancing in front of the whole school,” Henke said, “but it is better when the whole school is cheering for you.”
