Let’s Cut The Cake

Gay marriage is finally legalized in almost half of the 50 states bringing our nation to the brink of a new constitutional amendment

The cake is cut. Ringlets of white icing dance in twirls around the sides framing in the flattened buttercream icing. The guests have been served plates of chicken and salmon, the menu thought up years in advance. The toasts have been made. The married couple celebrates. The now married couple has been waiting for this moment for years. They were uncertain if they would ever get to legally be in union together recognized by the state. Today was the day gay marriage was legalized.

For about the past five years the question of gay marriage has been a prominent topic in politics. People can’t seem to decide if everyone should be able to marry the person they love, instead worried about the “traditional” meaning of marriage, that is between a man and woman. Some politicians and people in general have all kinds of reasons why people of the same sex can’t get married; it says in the bible that it’s a sin, it’s just wrong, or it’s sending the wrong message to our children. Really any reason.

Let’s set up a scene. So your one neighbor is gay and he decides he wants to marry his partner because they love each other but you go and stop it because for some reason it deeply impacts your life if they get married. No. Why would anyone else’s marital status matter it doesn’t affect you.

There is also the argument of they have waited this long so why does it matter. When two people are married certain benefits come with it. The spouses can file jointly for taxes, have inheritance rights, the right to make medical decisions if your spouse is incapacitated, be required to pay child support, be on the other spouse’s insurance, have the right to property division in case if divorce, and not to mention be recognized by the states as a married couple. These are all rights granted to a married man and woman, but for some reason some states don’t think every couple is eligible to receive these same basic rights.

Slowly times are changing. Over the past week, five states legalized same sex marriage including Utah, Oklahoma, Wisconsin, Virginia and Indiana. In addition nine more states including Kansas are most likely going to legalize it in the coming weeks. These social changes are due to a recent Supreme court ruling deeming a ban on same-sex marriage indefensible. These 14 states legalizing same sex marriage would bring the total of states to 33, over the majority. This total could move this topic to become a federal amendment forever silencing the oppositional force.

Love is love. Why is it that society discriminates based on sexual orientation? This is such a backwards  idea and the fact is people can just get over themselves and stop concerning themselves with the marriage of others. So can we finally just let any couple, no matter if they are gay, lesbian or bisexual cut the cake at their legalized weddings.
