America’s Guilty Pleasure: The Bachelor

Women all over the country tune in every Monday for their weekly dosage of ABC’s hit show “The Bachelor.” Typically surrounded by debate, this controversial program is now on its 20th season, proving that regardless, it is still drawing in viewers. Not to mention the numerous spin off shows such as Bachelor in Paradise, Bachelor Pad, and another fan favorite – The Bachelorette. The enterprise has even gained popularity internationally and had a United Kingdom and Canadian version produced.

Why is this show so widely loved and yet hated by so many? The answer is simple: people find it sexist and demeaning to women, a poor representation of America, and frankly, just a joke of “love.” Reality television seems to be heavily dominating our broadcasts and while some Americans are eating it up, others find shows like The Bachelor to be trash spoiling the minds of our country.

Regardless of what some may think, The Bachelor is a thoroughly entertaining show – no doubt. It may not be the most educational show and is very frequently the butt of jokes on talk shows; however, watching does have its perks. There is guaranteed drama, which in turn is guaranteed laughs for viewers. If anything, the ridiculous girls they cast for the show should make people feel better about themselves instead of worse. Are you a 23 year old who has given up on love and stooped low enough to put yourself on national television for the whole country to see you get rejected and humiliated? No? Then, congratulations, you are better off than 99 percent of The Bachelor cast.

Most of these men and women do not come on the show for love; they join to boost their career or become famous. So why do people take this program so seriously? These actors know what they’re signing up for. Clearly everything that takes place on camera is purely for viewership. The show makes money from being amusing, not for picking normal, boring people to cast. Love is also portrayed in a fairy tale kind of way that could make anyone wish they were dating the bachelor. But then there’s the fact he’s also dating 27 other women at the same time…

The Bachelor is an addictive show that should make viewers feel good about the fact they are nothing like the crazy actors casted. Watching ensures laughter and drama-filled entertainment for the full 2 hours each week.
