The Prologue
The opening scene to Beauty and the Beast immediately engrosses you in the story, as the beautiful stained glass windows tell a tragic tale that sets up the rest of the film. The storybook voice that begins the movie transports the audience to a magical world, where magic and enchantment is believable.
The Soundtrack
There is not a single song on this soundtrack that is worth skipping. From ‘Belle’ to ‘Be Our Guest’ to ‘Tale as Old as Time’, the songs take the audience on a rollercoaster of emotions. ‘Belle’, the opening song, takes you through a lively picture of the village Belle lives in, with all of the villagers pitching in to the song. Be Our Guest is undoubtedly one of the most widely known Disney Songs of all time, and ‘Tale as Old as Time’ radiates comfort and romance.
The Side Characters
The supporting characters in Beauty and the Beast have a perfect balance of humor and sincerity for the audience to become truly attached to them throughout the musical. From Lumiere and Cogsworth’s friendship, to Mrs. Pott’s love for her son, Chip, no one can help from falling in love with the numerous characters who live in the Beast’s castle. The audience is pulled to laugh at their jokes, and empathize with their hope for a better future.
The Costumes
Belle’s clothing throughout the film is iconic, from the light blue dress with its white apron, to the beautiful yellow ball gown that every little girl saves up for. These pieces create such a sense of nostalgia whenever I see them, whether that’s onstage for the Sion production, or when I watch the movie under a pile of blankets for the millionth time.
The Theme
Beyond the humor and entertaining characters, the deeper meaning behind the movie is one that everyone can learn from. Watching the Beast transform, not just physically, but mentally, throughout the film is a wonderful message to send in a Disney movie.
The Ballroom Dance
The classic ballroom dance scene during ‘Tale as Old as Time’ is one of the best parts of this movie, leaning into the magical romance of the film. As the audience watches Belle and the Beast dance with the beautiful melody of Mrs. Potts in the background, it’s impossible not to sit entranced in the scene.
Belle
Belle is an inspirational character for all young girls, in her selflessness, intelligence, and independence. She holds her ground throughout the movie, while staying true to her heart, and keeps her compassion for others even when facing adversity.

Belle, Mulan and Tiana were always my favorite “princesses” because they were independent! They thought differently, dreamed differently and acted differently and any romance or anything was second to their main goals. As a little niña I looked up to characters like that!
