Gridiron Glory: Pro Football and Father’s Day Gift Hall of Fame

Kansas City Chiefs Historian Bob Moore explains the significance of Chief’s founder Lamar Hunt in the formation of the NFL and the Super Bowl tradition on June 8. Hunt’s Super Bowl rings are currently on display at the Gridiron Glory exhibit.

Father’s Day is only a few weeks away. For most, that means a Sunday dedicated entirely to family time, grilling out and finding a thoughtful gift or card. While you can’t take your dad to a Chief’s game in June to celebrate, Union Station is offering an entertaining and affordable alternative on Father’s Day and throughout the summer with its temporary Gridiron Glory exhibit.

Running through Sept. 7, Gridiron Glory highlights the history of football and the NFL, artifacts from the Pro Football Hall of Fame and an interactive area to test participants’ skills. Admission for those over 12 years old is usually $14.95 and $11.95 for those ages 3 to 12, but tickets are buy one, get one free for dads on Father’s Day, June 21st. Hours of operation and exhibit details are found on www.unionstation.org/football/.

While the Gridiron Glory official exhibit is the first-ever travelling presentation from the Pro Football Hall of Fame and highlights all NFL teams, the Chiefs have added over 1,000 square-feet of their own history and memorabilia to the Union Station exhibit. The Chief’s section highlights the integral part of former Chiefs owner Lamar Hunt in the formation of the NFL and Chief’s players inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Since many sports fans have watched famous plays and followed changes in the NFL for years, the exhibit acts as a walk down memory lane, according to Chiefs historian Bob Moore.

“Most people have to be reminded [of NFL history] instead of informed,” Moore said.

Before the unveiling of Hunt’s Super Bowl, AFL Championship and Hall of Fame rings on June 8, a new addition to the exhibit, Moore explained that since the Pro Football Hall of Fame is located in relatively obscure Canton, Ohio, the exhibit is an opportunity for many to see stories and artifacts that they would otherwise miss out on. Some highlights include the Vince Lombardi Hall of Fame Trophy and the Chiefs Super Bowl IV Trophy.

Because the exhibit ties in the racial conflicts and social history involved with the formation of the NFL, personal stories of players and molds to compare participants’ muscles with those of the pros, it is entertaining even for those unfamiliar with football or its history.

Gridiron Glory covers all Father’s Day obligations, from the gift to the time spent with dad.
