Varsity soccer won 10-0 against Archbishop O’Hara High School April 11, ending the game early. According to senior team captain Stephanie Ostrander, the game provided players opportunities to try out new field positions.

“It was a good team win,” Ostrander said. “These types of games are always beneficial because we are able to work on touches, passing and other technical skills that we need to work on with a live defense.”

The first three goals in the first quarter were scored by seniors Izzy Romano, Laney Ulowetz and Ostrander after corner kicks by Ulowetz. The fourth goal was also scored after sophomore Haley Ulowetz’s corner kick by senior Madeline Hollenbeck. The first half was wrapped up with a fifth goal by junior Kathleen Gansner.

In the first half and throughout the second half, less experienced players were able to step into defensive positions and even midfield and forward positions. Freshman Gabby Grimaldi started off in defense and played the whole game, eventually moving into an offensive position. Because of the high score, the defense was able to play farther up the field than usual.  Junior Marie Orrick, sophomore Maddie Young and freshmen Molly Wagner, Hana Awad and Gretta Allen were all able to get more playing time.

The game ended early in the second half after Romano, senior Sarah King, Gansner, Young and Haley scored the last five goals.

“I was excited to get more playing time because it was one of those games where the pressure is off and you can work on new things,” Young said. “It helped me better learn the tendencies of my teammates and served as a confidence booster because I was able to take people on and eventually score.”
