All eyes were on the field Wednesday Sept. 21 in the afternoon as the softball team said farewell to some of their teammates. Seniors Natalie Arreguin, Lucy Bahner and Madeline Dercher were all recognized for their years of commitment to the team.

The parents of the girls walked hand in hand with them down to the middle of the field where each senior player was greeted with some heartfelt words and a smile.  Each girl received flowers for their time on the team and posters with photos of memories and some of the girls’ moments from the season were lined and strung up on the gates. All three of their senior softball photos were plastered on the dugout with balloons alongside to commemorate them.

“Senior night was very emotional. This year’s graduating class has been with us the longest and we’ve grown together,” junior Sarah Schaffer said. “I’m so excited to see what they are going to do in the future regarding softball and life. However, it’s crazy to think that we won’t be playing with them next year and this year’s graduating class won’t be on the bench cheering us on.”

The team went on to to have a win of 15-0 against St. Pius. With a short amount of time leading up to districts, its been said that the team’s new tactic is to change the lineup to see what works, work hard to swing at pitches that are in the strike zones and keep their heads up.

“We played good and I think it definitely showed in the final result,” sophomore Kaitlin Jones said.

The team’s win and send off for the seniors had everyone’s emotions running rampant as the team counted down on their final days with the girls.

“Senior night made me realize that, personally, my softball career is ending so I need to enjoy the rest of it while I still can,” senior Lucy Bahner said.

The night ended with the seniors walking off the field as students from the team and in the stands all joined in a chorus of the “we love you seniors” song. As the season begins to wrap up and the team dwindles down on their final days together, a sense of community and togetherness can be found in the dugout where it all started.
