The softball team defeated O’Hara in a landslide final home game Sept. 29. The game ended 14-4 in a mercy finish, a fitting score for the newly introduced student night.

The game was decided early by polished plays and good hitting. O’Hara’s disorganized outfield and errors on the catches gave the team an even deeper lead as the game continued. But it wasn’t because of blunders that the Storm prevailed, it was their polished teamwork and effort.

“The team is what gets the job done, and the way they played last night together I thought showed in the outcome of the game,” Athletic Director Kate Pilgreen said.

Senior Natalie Arreguin delivered the final run that ended the game by mercy rule, putting the Storm up by 10 runs. She smiled as she exited the field, and entered the slightly melancholy atmosphere of a dugout she may never visit again.

“It was definitely an emotional game for seniors on the team realizing that this is the last time playing with this team on the Sion field,” Arreguin said. “I think the outcome was all we could have hoped for.”

Arreguin’s mother and Softball Booster Club member Michelle Arreguin took the spectator side into her own hands to deliver Sion Athletics’ very first ‘Student Night.’ She was inspired by the lack of attendance at sporting events to add some incentive for spectators to come watch and participate in the prize drawings.

“I was trying to come up with some ideas to boost student attendance at the game,” Michelle Arreguin said. “It’s the last home game and we wanted to give prizes because we know what’s in a Sion students’ heart: food.”
