The Varsity Basketball team won 44-39 against Raymore-Peculiar High School Feb.16 and celebrated the four senior players and the lone senior on dance team. The game also raised $1,500 for the American Heart Association to correlate with February which is Heart Health month, according to Athletic Director Kate Pilgreen.

Basketball seniors Chloe Long, Abby Smith, Marie Orrick and Madeline Dercher and dance team senior Jessica Cloughley were recognized for their commitment to their respective sport. Each senior walked out to the center of the gym with their parents and received a bouquet of flowers from teammates.

“Senior night was something on my mind since the start of the season,” Long said. “I am grateful for the people who supported us and cheered for us before and during the game.”

Varsity head coach and counselor Leslie Berger started the red out game last year and it was continued this year by Pilgreen and Assistant Director of Athletics and Community Wellness Sarah Johnson. T-shirts and socks were sold the week before the game and T-shirts were sold at the game. Students were encouraged to bring a dollar to wear a red shirt with their uniform skirt the day of the game with all the proceeds going to the American Heart Association.

“It is just a really cool event,” Pilgreen said. “We have a halftime raffle to win a pot of $500 and if you make a half court shot $250 goes to the winner and the other $250 goes to the American Heart Association.”

Even though this wasn’t the basketball seniors’ last regular season game, senior night activities and the American Heart Association cause made the night memorable for the players.

“I will never also forget doing ‘seniors rock the house’ after a senior night victory,” Long said. “I feel like it really solidified that feeling of accomplishment and love for my senior class and team.”
