Finished Business Against Rival in Basketball Showdown
In the last basketball game of the regular season, the Storm defeated the St. Teresa’s Stars 53-50.
Sion’s varsity basketball team beat rival school, St. Teresa’s Academy, with a 53-50 finish. Students streamed into the gymnasium for the 7 p.m. game Feb. 23 dressed in the “unfinished business” theme.
“We chose the [unfinished business] theme because we knew a lot of people would dress up,” Scream Team Leader senior Maddie Marquardt said. “We really liked this theme from Spirit Week, and it was a fun play on words.”
The game began with two layups from junior Afton Fennewald, a layup from STA following shortly afterward. The score was neck and neck throughout the entire game, and the second quarter ended with a tie of 22-22. During halftime the cheer and dance teams both performed, and senior Lilia Nicholson was honored for her dedication as Stormy.
“The first points are always important because they set the tone of the game so it felt good to jump out on them early, and to raise our intensity,” Fennewald said. “It felt good to get revenge and one last win for our seniors.”
During the last seconds of the third quarter, senior Madeline Dercher made a three-pointer right at the buzzer. With two minutes left on the clock in the final quarter, Sion led the game 52-50. After being fouled, junior Maddie Young missed her first free throw but made the second, making the score 53-50. Within the last few seconds of the game, Adams blocked a shot and the buzzer sounded. With the Irish Cup back in the hands of the Storm, business is officially finished.
