Saying Goodbye to Seven Seniors
The gym lights dimmed. Cheerleaders lined the tunnel where seniors Kathleen Tushaus, Caroline Mollerus, Allie Weinrich, Alexis Arensberg, Bridget Roudebush, Lucy Voysey and Ellie Chaffee prepared to burst through as their names are announced. Armed with mini volleyballs to throw into the crowd, the seniors heard their names and sprinted through the tunnel for the last time. Senior night was celebrated during the home game against St. Michael the Archangel Wednesday, Oct. 12.
Seven seniors were honored at the last home game of the season for playing four years with the program. Seniors Bridget Roudebush and Ellie Chaffee will go on to play collegiately at Rockhurst University and Xavier University, respectively. Two senior managers, Carolyn Dickey and Sydney Crawford, were also recognized for their service.
“It was a very emotional feeling knowing that we’ve become a team in the last four years and that that was our last home game,” Dickey said.
The regular season ended with a victory in two matches. The first match ended with a score of 25-18. The team also took a victory in the second match with a score of 25-13. Every senior saw the court, with Mollerus getting multiple blocks. JV, who played prior to Varsity, also came out with a win.
“Being our last home game, we all really embraced each other on the court and worked together to enjoy our last win together at home,” Mollerus said.
With seven seniors graduating from the 10 person team, two sophomores and a freshman are the only remaining Varsity members. The seniors have led by example, according to Head Coach Bob Lampen.
“We have a good group of seniors,” Lampen said.
The team plays in Districts starting Monday Oct. 16 in the Class 4 District 13 competition. Playing first against Belton, if the team wins they will advance to the next round.
“We have a lot of energy going into Districts,” Mollerus said. “We’re working really hard to prepare and hopefully come out with a win.”
