Dance and Cheer Celebrate Seniors at Annual Senior Night
Dance and cheer team draw crowds of family and friends to come support them at one of their last events of the season.
As the cheer and dance seasons are winding down both teams celebrated the annual senior night Jan. 23. Cheer has a total of 11 seniors and dance team has five seniors.
“We are having 16 seniors presented. Last year cheer didn’t have any. It was just kind of an interesting year. There weren’t that many people in that grade who were in cheer so we went from none to a ton,” Cheer Coach and Physical Education teacher Lisa Lauck said.
Juniors from both cheer and dance helped prepare for the night by making posters for the seniors and as they were presented, the juniors brought flowers, candy and a small gift to the seniors as they walked up with their family members.
“It’s really special because most of us have been on the cheer team all four years and it shows how far we have come and how we stuck with something we really love,” cheer senior Gabi Atchity said.
When the seniors walk down the court with their parents, several things are announced such as where they are planning to attend college, their academic and athletic achievements, and a favorite memory from the past four competition seasons. 150 cheer pamphlets were also passed out including the information that was announced in the microphone so the audience could see and read about the cheer seniors according to Lauck.
“It’s really fun to be doing it with cheer because we are friends with those girls and its special to spend this night with them,” senior dance co-captain Mary Evans said.
Dance team performed a kick dance at halftime which is the first time that an audience at school has seen the routine. Varsity basketball played St. James Academy and lost with a final score of 60-52.
“It makes me happy that it is our last year with these girls and I’ve been with them since freshman year and it’s really special to spend this night with them and commemorate our last year together,” Evans said.
