Swim Places First at Independent League Championship
For the first time since 2013, the swim team receives first place at the Independent League Championship.
The swim team received first place at the Independent League Championship for the first time since 2013 Feb. 7. Competing against 14 schools including St. Teresa’s Academy, Center High School and St. Pius, this championship was particularly special for senior Meredith Oswald who received her very first individual state qualifying time in the 100-meter fly.
“Getting first place was great but getting the state cut was even better,” Oswald said. “When I first got the cut, I was kind of numb but it all sunk in when [my teammate] hugged me on my way past her.”
The State Championship is Feb. 15 and 16. As of right now, the swim team will be competing for a total of four state titles in the 200-meter relay, 400-meter free relay and 200-meter breaststroke, swam by senior Ellie Magsamen and sophomore Olivia Townsend. Some races hold a “consideration time” and will be evaluated by Missouri State High School Activites Association. The schools holding the fastest 32 times in that event will be able to compete at State. For Chemistry Teacher and Swim Coach Kelly Timson, the win was not surprising, but was still exciting.
“It was a total team effort,” Timson said. “I am so proud of the girls for all the work they put in all season and for stepping up and racing and performing at such a high level.”
