Both the Varsity and JV  Cross Country teams won first place at the Excelsior Springs Invitational at the Excelsior Springs Golf Course Oct. 2.

“All the girls ran really well considering that it is a tough hilly course and that it was a kinda hot day,” cross country coach Reynold Middleton said. “Varsity won this meet last year and JV got second and so it was great seeing both the JV and varsity teams win the meet.”

Junior Lily Henkle led the varsity team with a third place finish and a time of 21:58. Henkle was followed respectively by junior Nina Trouve, seniors Brenna Richart and Gretta Allen, junior Rose Orrick and sophomore Dillan Elmquist. All six varsity runners placed in the top 20, helping the team win the meet.

“The course was really difficult and honestly every step felt like death but I was really happy with how everyone on the team did,” Henkle said. “It felt really good for JV and Varsity to both win.”

The JV team also made a strong appearance winning the JV competition. Junior Bridget Schumm led the JV race with her first place finish and time of 25:30. All seven of the JV runners finished in the top twenty five. The team still has three regular season meets left and will be heading to the Kearney Invitational Oct. 6.

“I think this was a tough race for everyone but I think everyone did really well,” Schumm said. “I’m excited to see what the rest of the regular season meets bring.”
