It came down to the very end Dec. 4, at the basketball game versus St. Teresa’s Academy, with a final score of 43-40 and a loss for the Storm. The game was held at STA at 7 p.m.

“I think we had a slow start,” senior Mia McLey said. “But by the second quarter, it got better.”

Although the team a rough start in the first quarter of the game according to McLey, they ended the first half with a close score of 20-18. After the break, the team was able to equalize the score, making it a tied match entering the fourth quarter.

“It was very intense, from our side of the gym it was a blur,” Head Coach Kate Pilgreen said. “They played with every ounce of energy and heart they actually possessed. I’m sure of that.”

The fourth quarter was full of screaming fans and racing hearts, who were invested in their team winning. With seconds left, STA lead by three points, all the Storm needed was a three-pointer.

“It takes a lot of composure and energy and maintains that throughout the game.” senior captain Molly Wagner said. “I reminded my teammates throughout the game to not let the games surroundings get into their head and just play the game.”

After multiple intentional fouls to stop the clock and missed free throws by STA, the team was unable to put any more points on the board, leaving the score at 43-40.

“With STA being our second game there were a lot of nerves, especially for some people,” McLey said. “I was disappointed because we were so close to beating them, but we played with our hearts and did a really good job at working together.”

Being only the second game for the season, there are more chances for the team to make a comeback and improve. The two teams meet again to compete for the Irish Cup Feb. 21 at home at 7 p.m.

“I told the kids last night, this is going to hurt, but it is a great place to bounce back from,” Pilgreen said. “There’s not quite a sting like a rivalry game.”
