Stormy Second Half
Varsity field hockey defeated Pattonville High School 1-0 during their home game Saturday, Oct. 19.
As the rain clouds dissipated and the teams reassembled on the field for the second half, coach Gwyn Savage’s halftime pep talk set the players in motion. Although it was a close game, the varsity field hockey team prevailed in the last 25 minutes scoring 1-0 against Pattonville High School Oct. 19.
“After a slow start, the girls finally woke up and got into the game. communication improved and they battled hard and connected their passes,” Savage said.
Sophomore goalie Elizabeth Nordhus and fellow defenders worked to move the ball through Pattonville players and out of midfield. After multiple shots on goal by both teams, the first and only goal scored was by forward junior Lia Concannon in the 12th minute via an assist from forward junior Kate Conway.
“Once I scored it felt amazing and surprising. It all happened so fast I couldn’t believe it when it went in,” Concannon said.
The game ended in two corner plays that both took place after the clock hit zero. The final score was set after a shot by junior forward Olivia Overlease was stopped by Patonville goalie Rachel Gamino Pinon.
“I was really hopeful about the corners at the end of the game,” midfield junior Mason Lewis said. “Everyone really wanted a last-minute goal to end the game.”
This was the team’s second-to-last home game of the year. The season now nears a successful close and spirits are high, according to forward senior Sophia Angrisano.
“This season has gone better than my other three seasons playing here at Sion,” Angrisano said. “Our team works well with each other and are always motivating each other to do better and it’s giving us better results.”
