The Storm’s first game was against Marshall Highschool. Even though they have never played this team before, Sion beat them by 40 points with Junior Abby Wendte dropping 20 points in one game.
“I just kept taking shot after shot and I was on a roll,” Wendte said. “It was a fun game to play in because they werent a very competitive team and I could be more creative.”
Junior Taelyn Smith’s main focus was being prepared for anything, because the storm has never played Marshall before.
“We didn’t really know what to expect from the first team because we have never played them before,” Smith said. “ We went in with a focused mindset, wanting to grow from our win the Friday prior.”
Smith enjoys playing in tournaments more than regular season games because of the excitement and competitiveness .
“I prefer playing in tournaments because it is fun to go up and down in the brackets.” Smith said. “Going into your first game you have no clue who you might be playing later on in the tournament, and with so many teams playing in one place its a packed environment adding to the excitement and buzz of the atmosphere.”
Sions next opponent was the tournaments host, Pleasant Hill. The Storm beat them 64-32 with Smith averaging 10.5 points per game.
“We played pleasant hill and kind of knew what to expect because we watched their first game,” Smith Said. “We knew they were beatable but we still went in with a focused mindset and had a good game and ended up winning by over 30 points.
Going into the final undefeated, the storm was ready to take the crown as tournament champions. However, mother nature had other plans. With icy roads and the outside temperature getting below 0, the tournament final was canceled.
“We were headed to the championship on Saturday but it unfortunately got canceled,” Senior Emerson Shelton said. “The extra cold temperatures were inconvenient because we had to dress super warm and drive so slow on all the icy roads.”
“We were excited to go into the championship game,” Smith said. “ Our hope was tp win with our momentum but the game got canceled because of the weather and I was disappointed for sure.”
