Weaving through the defenders, junior Annie Johnson lines up a shot on goal. The score is tied, 7-7, the game in overtime, both teams playing for sudden death. She shoots – and she scores! Securing a second Sion victory against Lee’s Summit West.
“I was really tired, and I think the rest of the team was too,” Johnson said. “But I know we all really wanted the win. I knew the team would be proud, and that’s what motivated me to try and get the goal. It was such a team effort and I couldn’t have done it without every girl out there. It was a rough and physical game but we all deserved that win!”
Johnson’s game winning goal was not the only accomplishment of the game, senior Marli Brown also made her 100th save of the season during the 2nd quarter, an impressive feat considering it was only the 7th game this season.
“I feel really good about last night,” Brown said. “I’m really happy it happened this early in the season too. I felt so relieved when they announced it. I get kind of caught up on numbers sometimes, and it can impact how I play. I was trying not to get in my head, and then hearing I hit 100 really ripped the bandaid off and let me hone in on the game and not worry about it anymore.”
