Students Participate in Beneficial Basketball Tournament
Babies, witches, minions and more competed in the 13th annual Storm Stomp Sept. 18, raising a record $38,000 for scholarships. The three vs. three basketball tournament was held in the Sion gym. According to senior co-chair Stephanie Ostrander, about 35 teams signed up to play.
Every team played at least one four minute game. If they won, they advanced to the next round. Teams kept playing until there were two left, the Baby Ballers and the Freudian Slips. The Freudian Slips included counselors Erika Ellwanger, Karen Phillips, Nancy Stevens and Leslie Young. The Baby Ballers, sophomores Afton Fennewald, Sara Totta and junior Kathleen Gansner, won.
Each team dressed as a theme. Prizes were given to the teams with the best costumes. And for the fourth year in a row, the best high school costume prize went to seniors Maggie Keller, Anna Ciani, Katarina Qamar, Camille Keane and freshman Ingrid Keane, with a Star Wars theme.
Storm Stomp was started in 2002 by the Reintjes sisters for their senior service project. This event is used to help raise money for future Sion girls that are academically eligible of attending Sion but need financial assistance according to Ostrander. The money goes to scholarships for these girls to help them financially so they can attend Sion.
“It’s important that we have this event. Not only does it raise money for scholarships but it is also a big event for everyone to be involved. It brings unity to the school,” senior Co-Chair Katie Pendergast said.
