A Chalk Walk to Remember
Chalk art enthusiasts from all ends of Kansas City gathered at Crown Center Sept. 12- 13 to watch sidewalk paintings come to life, reach out to the artists and observe street performers. Overall the Kansas City Chalk and Walk Festival was a fun and worthwhile event with a lot of activities, and when it comes around next year, everyone should attend.
The Crown Center square was packed with many families and little kids running around viewing the chalk drawings and the artists. Each artist was busy with their creations of multiple- themed pieces. Some were original pieces while some artists looked to reference pieces for their work such as Candy Land, Operation and Trivia Crack. In addition, there were cut-outs to stick your face into and become famous paintings such as “The Scream” and “American Gothic.”
According to the Kansas City Chalk and Walk Festival website, Kansas City is host to many visitors from the surrounding states and nation during the summer months, and the festival provides a wonderful added value to the tourist’s Kansas City experience.
The featured artists of the day had a bigger space to create under tents to shield them from the sun. Giant street art covered every inch of the sidewalk and people walked up and down trying to get closer to the artwork. Paintings of lifelike people to drawings of Hungry, Hungry Hippos graced the streets with an exquisite attention to detail.
“It was really cool seeing all the local venues come together and just have cool chalk art work. There was a lot of families there, and they were all working on one piece together which was really awesome,” senior Olivia Garrison said.
In the center of the festivities a section was kept clean for the visitors to try their art skills after being inspired from the work seen all around them. Kids and adults alike both stooped low to the ground to draw out what captivated their imaginations from the stimuli of the day. Bright colors flooded every corner and pieces of chalk lay around waiting to be picked up to be used in the creation of the work.
This event was very relaxing and enjoyable to experience. This all-weekend event allowed for the creativity of Kansas City to flourish in the form of chalk art work.
