Prom was held at the Overland Park Sheraton Convention Center April 8 with a theme of “Last Night in KC” chosen by the junior prom committee.
“The more we talked that theme through, the more original it seemed and we had tons of cool ideas for it,” junior Head Prom Committee Chair Paige Shankland said. “The theme itself I think is cool because we have so much city pride and wanted to display in in our prom.”
According to junior Prom Committee Music Chair Carolyn Dickey, this year the committee put emphasis on the senior attendees, and the fact that the prom would be their last Sion dance.
“[For] this year’s prom, we really wanted it to be special for the seniors,” Dickey said. “This is their last prom and we wanted to host an ‘amazing Last Night in Kansas City.’”
The main differences between this year’s prom and proms from past years was the focus on decorations in the hallway leading to the ballroom. Visuals and photo-ops filled the space. Live jazz music also played while students and their dates walked in, according to Shankland.
“My last prom was a blast, I had such an amazing time with my friends,” senior Ali Odermann said. “My favorite part was when the DJ played ‘Bailando,’ and the girls [from the Guatemala service trip] had a throwback to dancing on the bus to that song.”
In total, there were 296 people in attendance including chaperones according to Shankland. The dance was successful with slightly higher attendance than in past years.
