Arleth, how do I drive in the snow? – Anonymous
With winter reaching its peak, our community has already experienced a significant amount of snow. I have compiled the top tips and tricks not only from my own experience but also from extensive research on the topic. Enjoy!
First and foremost, check your route beforehand. Even if you live just five minutes from school, snow and ice can cause traffic delays and accidents, turning those five minutes into fifteen. Use Apple Maps or Google Maps to get an ETA and explore alternative routes that may have less snow. Busy streets are typically cleared of ice more efficiently than less populated ones.
When on the road, practice gentle driving. Imagine you have a cup of hot coffee in your lap that you don’t want to spill. The smoother your movements, the safer you’ll be.
Let’s be realistic, you may encounter some scares; perhaps your car starts skidding. The key here? Don’t panic. Keep your eyes focused on where you want to go, not where the vehicle is sliding.
If you feel your front wheels skid or the front tires lose grip and turn wider than expected, ease off the gas; this should help regain control.
Conversely, if you experience a rear-wheel skid where the back tires lose traction and your car starts to spin out, turn the wheel in the same direction.
Some big no-nos for driving in snow: Never slam on the brakes, as this will eliminate any control over your vehicle.
If you’re someone who tends to speed, think twice about attempting it in icy conditions. It’s okay to disregard the speed limit and instead follow the pace of the cars around you, even if it’s much slower than you’re used to.
The best way to learn how to drive in the snow is through experience. However, if you don’t feel comfortable or capable of driving, DON’T! Your safety is the number one priority.
My final piece of advice applies to more than just snow: Everyone should have an emergency kit in their trunk. This kit could include everything from blankets and flashlights to water.
Stay safe out there! With Love,
Arleth Guevara
