At the celebratory, Kansas City Chiefs, Super Bowl Parade shots were fired around 2 p.m. Wednesday. Reports state that there are 21 injuries and one deceased.
In a statement from the Kansas City Fire Department, eight victims have immediate life-threatening injuries, seven victims have life-threatening injuries, and six have non-life-threatening injuries. Children’s Mercy has stated that they are currently treating 12 children, nine of whom suffer from gunshot wounds, aged six to 15.
Kansas City Police Chief Stacey Graves stated in a press conference that three people had been taken into custody, and there were 800 police officers in the general area.
Video footage shows a fan tackling one of the armed suspects as he tries to flee the scene, and the fan is unharmed.
Shots broke out in the Union Station area, close to the parking garage, and as of now, KCPD and KCFD officials are still attempting to reunite children with their families.
According to KMBC News, multiple Chiefs players attempted to help calm children and families down in the direct aftermath of the shooting, and reportedly no players or coaches were injured, and all have been removed from the scene.
The NFL released the following statement: “We are deeply saddened by the senseless shooting that occurred today near the end of the rally in Kansas City for the Chiefs. Our thoughts are with the victims and everyone affected. We are grateful for the quick and thorough response of law enforcement and emergency personnel.”
