For me, it’s crucial to have a pre-gameday routine. The night before, I pack a filling lunch that won’t upset my stomach and put a couple of snacks in my bag just in case; playing on an empty stomach is war. Then I fill up my gallon water bottle and make sure I have some type of energy drink just because I have an addiction. Then I recommend making sure any uniform necessities are washed and folded in your bag because worrying about your equipment brings intense nerves. One of the most important things for me is actually cleaning my room or car and showering because it makes me feel reset and ready. For any night owls like me, this is the one night a week I try to go to bed before midnight.
As for the day of, I always get pre-game anxiety. For me, and my personal sports, it helps me to watch college lax games or pro tennis matches. I try and pick one thing from these games to zone in on during my own game. This makes me feel more prepared and confident in how I will play. I also block out any assignments or ACTs, I may have the next day. It helps a ton if you are locked in on your sport.
The best way to get the nerves out before your game is to get ready with your teammates and listen to music. I have my songs I have to listen to before I am on the field to get in the right zone. I think getting ready with your teammates and cracking jokes is not only so much fun but takes off the pressure. Overall just focus on how you can improve for your team and work out the nerves.
