On Thursday, Oct. 31, Sion held its annual Storm Stomp basketball tournament fundraiser to raise money for incoming student scholarships. The event consisted of a three on three basketball tournament of teams who worked together to fundraise money together for the chance to win different gift cards and prizes.
The preparation for Storm Stomp began in May, where co-chairs Francie Keithline and Vivian Kuntz met for meetings to plan the event. They have worked together with different sponsors and partners to donate prizes for the cause.
“My favorite part of being a co-chair has been learning all of the behind the scenes work and getting to work with Mrs. Axtell and Mrs. Blount who work on fundraising every day.” Keithline said. “I’ve gotten to meet so many more girls and form relationships with them through this process and I can’t wait to see all of our hard work culminate into this event.”
Many students created their teams with different themes and nicknames to go along with the basketball tournament. On the day of the event, the whole student body came together to watch hype videos created by the fundraising teams and cheer on students and faculty in the basketball games.
“I love the actual day of storm stomp and the school spirit that it brings, I love that it is on actual halloween so it makes the costumes so much more fun,” junior Nora Conway said. “I get so competitive in the moment of playing and that makes it much more fun.”
To help raise money for the event, students reached out to family members and friends to help donate to the cause. Each team was also required to donate at least $35 to participate in the basketball tournament.
“I am on the storm stomp committee so I got to have more of an insight to the event and all the work that goes into planning it and fundraising to get prizes and donations,” Conway said. “I reached out to my grandma, aunt and uncle, and my parents to help me fundraise the amount needed for my team.”
Overall, Storm Stomp was a success and fundraised $23,435 towards student scholarships for upcoming years.
“Overall I just love storm stomp and the environment the event creates for the student body to be competing in the spirit of fun for such a great cause.” Conway said.
